Hight quality HIPS 3D-Printer Filament Material in 2.85mm
HIPS Filament 2.85 mm – The Partner for ABS & Design
Our 2.85 mm HIPS Filament (High Impact Polystyrene) is a true all-rounder. It is primarily used as a dissolvable support material for ABS prints in dual extrusion processes (e.g., on Ultimaker S5 or BCN3D Sigma) because it dissolves completely in D-Limonene. However, as a standalone material, HIPS impresses with a noble, matte surface that makes layer lines almost invisible.
Why HIPS in 2.85 mm Format?
HIPS shows its strengths particularly in printers with 2.85 mm Bowden systems. It is lighter than ABS and PLA, which saves weight on large models. Its high impact strength makes it robust, while the matte texture makes it a favorite among architects and model makers.
- Soluble in Limonene: Perfect support structures for complex ABS parts.
- Matte Look: Hides layer lines, looks like plaster or sandstone.
- Excellent Sanding: Ideal for post-processing and painting.
- Impact Resistant: Tough and resilient under mechanical stress.
- Lightweight: Lower density than PLA or ABS.
Technical Processing Instructions
HIPS behaves very similarly to ABS during printing. It strictly requires a heated print bed and benefits from an enclosed build chamber to prevent warping. Cooling fans should be turned off or set very low, similar to ABS.
Recommended Parameters (Z3D HIPS 2.85 mm)
- Hotend Temperature: 225 °C – 245 °C (similar to ABS)
- Print Bed: 90 °C – 110 °C (good adhesion is essential)
- Cooling: Part fan off (0 %) or very low to avoid layer splitting
- Adhesion: ABS juice, hairspray, or special adhesion agents on the bed
Applications for 2.85 mm HIPS
- As Support Material for complex ABS prints (Dual Extrusion).
- Architectural models (due to the matte, paper-like appearance).
- Large figures and cosplay parts (easy to sand and paint).
- Housings and prototypes with high impact resistance.
HIPS as Support for ABS
The biggest advantage of HIPS in 2.85 mm dual printing is its chemical compatibility with ABS. Both materials adhere perfectly to each other and have similar shrinkage rates. After printing, place the part in a bath of D-Limonene (citrus extract), which dissolves the HIPS leaving the ABS part intact.
