ABS Filament – Properties, Advantages & Applications in 3D Printing
ABS filament (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is one of the most popular engineering plastics in 3D printing and is known for its high impact resistance, temperature stability, and excellent mechanical strength. It is ideal for functional parts, prototypes, and applications that require durability and long-term stability.
Advantages of ABS Filament
- High strength and durability
- Excellent impact and shock resistance
- Heat-resistant (up to approx. 85–100 °C)
- Ideal for functional and technical applications
- Can be post-processed (sanding, drilling, milling)
- Acetone vapor smoothing possible for glossy, smooth surfaces
Printing & Material Properties
Compared to PLA, ABS requires slightly higher temperatures and a controlled printing environment. An enclosed build chamber or printer housing is recommended to reduce warping.
Optimal Print Settings for ABS
- Nozzle temperature: 230–260 °C
- Bed temperature: 90–110 °C
- Build chamber: preferably enclosed
- Cooling fan: 0–20% (depending on detail)
- Print speed: 40–70 mm/s
Tip: For large parts, using a raft or brim helps minimize warping.
Typical Applications of ABS Filament
- Functional and replacement parts
- Mechanical components
- Prototype development
- Electronics housings
- Tool holders, clips, brackets
- Automotive applications
ABS vs. PLA – When Is ABS the Better Choice?
PLA is easier to print but less heat-resistant and not as robust. ABS is the better choice when parts need to:
- withstand high mechanical loads,
- tolerate temperatures above 60 °C,
- endure mechanical stress,
- be post-processed or glued.
