Hight quality 2.85mm ABS 3D-Printer Filament Material

ABS Filament 2.85 mm – The Industry Standard for Technical Parts

For industrial applications and robust functional parts, ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) in 2.85 mm remains one of the top choices on the market. Users of professional FDM printers especially value this material for its extreme durability and ability to withstand high mechanical and thermal stress.

Why print with ABS in 2.85 mm format?

The thicker diameter of 2.85 mm offers excellent control over material flow, particularly in printers with long Bowden tubes (e.g., Ultimaker series). The filament is less prone to buckling than thinner strands and allows for precise retraction.

Key strengths at a glance:

  • High Heat Deflection: Stable up to approx. 90–100 °C (ideal for automotive parts).
  • Excellent Post-Processing: Can be perfectly sanded, drilled, painted, and glued.
  • Chemical Smoothing: The surface can be vapor-smoothed with acetone to achieve injection-molding quality.
  • Impact Resistance: The material absorbs shocks better than PLA and does not break brittlely.

Processing Tips for 2.85 mm ABS

ABS is an engineering thermoplastic that prefers controlled conditions. To prevent the so-called "warping effect" (the part detaching from the print bed), a heated print bed is mandatory. For larger components, we strongly recommend a closed build chamber to keep the ambient temperature constant.

Recommended Parameters (Z3D ABS 2.85 mm)

  • Nozzle Temperature: 235 °C – 260 °C (depending on hotend type)
  • Heated Bed: 95 °C – 110 °C
  • Adhesion: Kapton tape, ABS slurry, or special adhesion sprays recommended
  • Cooling: Turn off part fan or run at minimum speed (max. 20 %)
  • Print Speed: 40 – 60 mm/s for optimal layer adhesion

Applications in Industry & Craft

Thanks to its matte finish and chemical resistance, 2.85 mm ABS is the favorite for:

  • Functional prototypes and series production parts
  • Enclosures for Raspberry Pi or electronics (heat resistant!)
  • Brackets, fixtures, and tool handles
  • Model making parts intended for painting
  • Spare parts in the automotive sector (interior)
