PLA-CF Carbon Filament – Properties, Advantages & Applications in 3D Printing

PLA-CF (PLA reinforced with carbon fibers) is a high-performance engineering material that combines the easy printability of PLA with the exceptional stiffness and strength of carbon fibers. The embedded short carbon fibers provide increased rigidity, a matte carbon-finish surface, and significantly improved dimensional stability – ideal for functional, technical, or visually demanding components.

Advantages of PLA-CF Carbon Filament

  • Extremely high stiffness & strength thanks to carbon fiber reinforcement
  • Matte, professional carbon-finish surface
  • Minimal deformation (almost no warping)
  • Significantly improved dimensional accuracy
  • Easier to print than ABS-Carbon or Nylon-Carbon blends
  • Perfect for technical and functional parts

Printing & Material Properties

PLA-CF prints similarly to standard PLA but requires a hardened or wear-resistant nozzle, as carbon fibers are highly abrasive. The material provides exceptionally clean surfaces with an elegant matte carbon look.

Optimal Print Settings for PLA-CF

  • Nozzle temperature: 190–220 °C (depending on brand & printer)
  • Bed temperature: 50–65 °C
  • Build chamber: open or closed
  • Cooling fan: 40–100% (depending on detail requirements)
  • Print speed: 40–60 mm/s
  • Nozzle: Hardened steel / coated steel / ruby nozzle

Tip: Reduce retraction slightly, as carbon fibers add resistance during extrusion. For maximum strength, print at the higher end of the recommended temperature range.

Common Applications of PLA-CF Filament

  • Stiff and load-bearing technical parts
  • Brackets, fixtures & functional prototypes
  • RC models, drone and robotics components
  • Design parts with a premium carbon-look surface
  • Geometries requiring high dimensional accuracy
  • Lightweight components with high bending stiffness

PLA-CF vs. Standard PLA – When Does Carbon Make Sense?

Compared to regular PLA, PLA-CF offers much higher stiffness, better heat resistance, and a professional matte appearance. PLA-CF is the better choice when parts:

  • are exposed to mechanical stress,
  • require maximum stiffness instead of flexibility,
  • should have an elegant matte carbon-fiber finish,
  • demand high dimensional stability and low warping.
