ASA Filament – Properties, Advantages & Applications in 3D Printing

ASA filament (Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate) is the ideal material for outdoor applications, technical components, and long-lasting constructions. It is similar to ABS in strength but offers significantly higher UV and weather resistance. This makes ASA perfect for continuous outdoor use and for any application that requires stability, temperature resistance, and long-term color durability.

Advantages of ASA Filament

• Extremely UV- and weather-resistant – ideal for outdoor projects
• High impact resistance and mechanical strength
• Heat-resistant (up to approx. 90–105 °C)
• Good chemical resistance
• Less yellowing and better color stability than ABS
• Post-processing possible (sanding, drilling, or acetone vapor smoothing)

Printing & Material Properties

ASA requires similar printing conditions to ABS but is less prone to warping. However, an enclosed build chamber is still recommended to achieve optimal results and avoid deformation.

Optimal Print Settings for ASA

• Nozzle temperature: 240–265 °C
• Bed temperature: 90–110 °C
• Build chamber: enclosed recommended
• Cooling fan: 0–20% (for best layer adhesion)
• Print speed: 40–60 mm/s

Tip: For large outdoor parts, using a brim can help improve adhesion and reduce warping.

• UV resistance and color stability are important,
• temperature fluctuations and heat must be tolerated,
• high strength and durability are required.
